If there are no urgent cases to discuss, we can explore topics such as the unique challenges of working in different therapy settings (community mental health, group practice, private practice, and schools); navigating boundaries, transference, and countertransference; addressing burnout and self-care with genuine compassion; and building a trustworthy professional network and business contacts.

Why trauma therapists join consultation groups

Trauma work is clinically complex and emotionally demanding. A consultation group gives you a place to think through difficult cases, pacing and stabilization decisions, and dissociative presentations with colleagues who do the same work.

Regular consultation is also one of the most practical protections against vicarious trauma and burnout.

How to choose a group

  • Match the group’s approach to how you work, or choose one that crosses modalities if you want breadth.
  • If you see clients with dissociation, look for a leader with specific experience there.
  • Ask how the group handles self-of-therapist reactions and vicarious trauma.
  • Check the size and how often you would get to present.
