    Building A Values-Based Private Practice

    Eliza Hecht

    Friday · 12:00PM - 1:00PM ET

These small group consultations are intended for both clinicians in early private practice and those who have been in practice for a while but are interested in pivoting to a structure that feels more values-aligned. When I started my own practice, I wanted to build a business that was firmly grounded in my values, felt authentic to me, AND was also financially sustainable. It was extremely difficult to find models of what I wanted to create. It was hard enough to even find resources explaining the basic logistics needed to open a private practice properly. The limited business advice I did receive felt overly cold, inauthentic, or questionably clinically sound. I decided to develop my own model for the practice I believed was possible. In speaking to people over the years, I have realized that many, many therapists are interested in creating a practice that aligns with their value system but they don't know how to go about it. I have loved figuring out the logistics of building a more ethical business - it's something I find really energizing and am extremely passionate about. I want to share the resources and insight I've developed over the years to make it easier for others' to build their own values-based practices. My hope is that access to these resources helps further my own values-based goals of increased access to treatment and increased quality of life for clinicians. Some issues that have been addressed in past consultations: - Balancing accessible care and financial stability - Developing a fair and standardized sliding scale to meet client need and satisfy legal concerns - Hiring employees; things to consider in the hiring process; figuring out a fair compensation structure - Creating an equitable environment for employees - The steps required to start a private practice in New York - Navigating NYS Paid Family Leave benefits - Tolerating the financial ebbs and flows of being in private practice - Feeling comfortable taking time off - Observing and setting limits with clients - Managing burnout - Increasing competency and confidence as a clinician The consultation group meets monthly for an hour at a time. The cost is $100/session for a series of 6 monthly sessions ($600 total). Scholarships are available based on financial need.

What is a DBT consultation team?

In Dialectical Behavior Therapy, the consultation team is a core part of the treatment, not an optional extra. Teams of DBT providers typically meet weekly to support each other, stay motivated, build skills, and keep treatment faithful to the model.

Clinicians outside a DBT program often join a virtual team or consultation group so they can practice DBT with that support in place.

How to choose a group

  • Ask whether the group operates as a full DBT consultation team (with team agreements and a set agenda) or as a looser consultation group.
  • Check the expected commitment. Teams usually expect weekly attendance.
  • Ask what training members are expected to have completed.
  • If you are pursuing certification, ask whether participation can be documented.

Common questions

Do I need a consultation team to practice DBT?
According to Behavioral Tech, the training organization founded by Marsha Linehan, practitioners can only deliver DBT effectively within a consultation team, and team participation is required for its comprehensive trainings and for DBT-Linehan Board of Certification.
