What is an IFS consultation group?

IFS consultation groups bring together clinicians using Internal Family Systems to discuss cases, practice the model, and notice how their own parts show up in sessions. Many groups blend case consultation with experiential work.

If you are pursuing IFS Certification through the IFS Institute, consultation must come from an IFS Approved Clinical Consultant. Ask the leader whether their group qualifies before you join.

How to choose a group

  • If you need certification hours, confirm the leader is a current IFS Approved Clinical Consultant.
  • Ask how the time is split between case consultation and experiential or self-of-therapist work.
  • Check that the group’s training level fits yours (newer to IFS vs. Level 1 completed or beyond).
  • Prefer small groups if you want regular time to present.

Common questions

Does group consultation count toward IFS Certification?
Partly. The IFS Institute requires at least 15 consultation hours with an IFS Approved Clinical Consultant, including at least 7 individual hours. The remaining hours can be group consultation with no more than six participants. Confirm current requirements with the IFS Institute.
